A rooftop solar plant is one of the most tangible ways for industrial facilities to cut energy costs. Here are the first steps towards a sound investment.
Energy is one of the largest operating costs for many industrial facilities. Rooftop solar plants offer one of the most tangible ways to reduce it by turning unused roof space into generation. A sound investment, however, starts with good planning.
1. Know your consumption
Everything starts with the facility's real consumption data. The monthly and hourly consumption profile determines how large the plant should be. Consuming most of the generated power on site shortens the payback period.
2. Assess the roof
The roof's orientation, pitch, shading and, above all, load-bearing capacity must be examined. A structural assessment where needed is important for long-term safety.
3. Size it correctly
An undersized system wastes potential; an oversized one can lengthen the payback period. The optimal capacity is set by evaluating consumption data, roof area and grid connection conditions together.
4. Plan the permitting and connection process
Under unlicensed generation, the connection application, project approval and acceptance steps take time. Regulations can change, so current rules must be followed.
5. Do not forget operation and monitoring
Once the plant is commissioned, regular cleaning, maintenance and generation monitoring keep it performing as expected for years.
